Data Governance Course Now Available
Monday, June 15, 2020
The Office of the Chief Data Officer has developed a Data Governance Course as a professional development opportunity for state employees. The course will be available beginning June 15, 2020 in the Commonwealth of Virginia Learning Center (COVLC). The course is highly recommended for Commonwealth data stewards, and will be available to all state employees providing an excellent opportunity for learning and growth in the area of public sector data governance and analytics concepts. The Office of the Chief Data Officer will engage the data stewards directly for training as they play a fundamental role in leveraging data as an enterprise asset.
Some of the topics covered in the five self-paced modules include: the data governance framework for the Commonwealth of Virginia, data lifecycle steps, different types of data (reference data, master data, and metadata), what defines a golden record, data owners vs. data stewards, data curators, data custodians and open data policies.
The Data Governance course will help increase data literacy across the Commonwealth and educate state employees on how they can utilize data as an enterprise asset to make evidence-based decisions, ultimately creating better outcomes for our constituents. Everyone plays an integral role, no matter what your job or title might be, in creating a culture where high quality data is valued and informs our decision making.
State employees are eligible to apply for the Public Sector Data Governance Professional (PSDGP) certification offered through the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP) if they choose to take advantage of the training. The certification requires successful completion of the PSDGP exam and a certification fee. State employees are encouraged to discuss certification requests with their agency supervisor or manager for additional guidance. Interested individuals do not have to be current ICCP members to take the exam. ICCP certification fees are listed below:
- The exam fee is $299
- The proctor fee is $50
- The certification fee is $125
More information about the certification can be found on the ICCP website (iccp.org) or by calling the ICCP at 1.847.299.4227. Ready to apply for the PSDGP certification? You can go online and purchase the items from their online store.
The Office of the Chief Data Officer is pleased to offer this professional development course to our state employees.
